The Pet Friendly Way To De-Ice This Winter

Posted on February 01, 2017 by Michael Moll | 0 comments

More often than not, the most popular de-icing salt or the cheapest is dangerous to our furry friends. They contain chemicals that can cause skin irritation and burns, digestive upset if ingested and even nervous system problems. The sodium chloride component breaks down in their system and causes sodium toxicity, this results in staggering, lethargy and even seizures.

What most people don't understand is that the risk is not only associated with dogs who eat the salt right from the bag, but the ones who lick it off their paws after being outside. So the next time you need to buy salt, look for bags that have a pet-friendly label on it, they typically contain urea, glycols, or other non-salt components. It is important to know that even these options can cause problems if ingested in large quantities.

 What you will need:

-Lots of your dogs FAVOURITE treats
-Cotton balls or gauze (lots)
-Ear cleaner, one that is reputable, preferably recommended by your Veterinarian

  1. Start off by giving your dog a few treats (if you have a nervous dog then get an assistant to continuously offer your pup small amounts of treats throughout the process)
  2. Wet a cotton ball in ear cleaner
  3. Place the cotton ball on your finger and place it down the ear canal until you feel resistance
  4. Once you have finished with the first cotton ball, massage the base of the ear canal to loosen up any debris stuck at the bottom of the ear
  5. Let your dog shake their head whenever possible, this will also help bring the debris from the lower ear to the surface
  6. Wipe from the inside out, and repeat steps 2 & 3 until your cotton comes out of the ear clean
  7. Once the canal is cleaned, wet another cotton ball and start cleaning all of the little crevices on the pinna (inside flap of the ear)
  8. Always end on a positive note by giving your dog a treat

*If you noticed ALOT of debris or any blood, stop what you are doing and call your Veterinarian, it is likely that your dog has an infection and should be cleaned and treated by a professional*

Did you know:

Puppies sleep 15-20 hours per day! Although it seems like they are fireballs of energy, they do in fact sleep most of the day as they are growing. Sleep is key to healthy development, just like babies. While a puppy sleeps there nervous system, immune system, brain and muscles are developing. It is exhausting being a puppy!
